Major high street food and coffee company Pret A Manger has opened at the University of Warwick – its first outlet in Coventry.

The new store serving freshly-prepared food-to-go and organic coffee is located in The Piazza in the centre of campus, close to Warwick Arts Centre, and its doors opened today (Friday, October 18).

Pret A Manger is the latest high street brand to be opening up across campus as part of a new retail focus by the University to provide a diverse range of food and drink outlets to appeal to students and staff, and the wider community.

There are currently 19 outlets on campus, 13 of which are University-managed cafes, bars, restaurants and shops, with six cafes, bars and restaurants managed by the Students’ Union.

The University is now seeking to attract more high street names to enhance the choice and vibrancy on campus, and provide healthier options at reasonable prices, in response to feedback from students and staff.

Tony Howard, Director of Food and Retail Strategy at the University of Warwick, said: “The opening of Pret A Manger is the latest exciting development in our new retail strategy based on customer research which aims to offer a broader choice for students and staff, and encourage more people from the local community onto campus to eat, drink and shop.

“Pret A Manger is a well-known and hugely popular international brand, and its commitment to sustainability also makes it a great fit for the University, reflecting our own aim of making a positive difference to the environment.

“The fact that this is the first Pret A Manger in Coventry means that the University is bringing something new and fresh to the city as a whole.”

Pret’s sandwiches, salads and wraps are freshly-prepared each day, with any unsold food offered to charity.

The store, which is open seven-days-a-week, features Pret’s new autumn menu offering a wider choice of hot food, particularly at lunchtime with toasted focaccias and omelettes among the new ranges.

Nine new flavours have also been added to the soup menu, including four vegan options, and the seasonal favourite coffee, Pumpkin Spice Latte, makes a welcome return.

Abinet Amde, Regional Operations Director at Pret A Manger, said: “We’re looking forward to bringing Pret A Manger’s freshly prepared food and organic coffee to the University of Warwick – our first shop in Coventry.

“Our current Autumn Menu has lots of delicious, warming items, including a range of focaccias and new soup recipes, which are perfect for the cooler weather, and our Team Members, led by General Manager Ivo Silva, are excited to deliver it to new customers in the area.”

To celebrate the store opening, Pret will be giving out 300 free coffee postcards on campus, as well as 50 £10 gift cards.

As part of the University’s new retail strategy, Aroma, part of Caffè Nero, opened a new outlet on Westwood Campus in September, following on from Caffè Nero opening at the University’s new Sports and Wellness Hub in August.
