The basic requirement of a leader is to be present. Interactive activities will demonstrate how difficult it can be to be present and embed the need to be conscious of being present at the right moment.
14:40 – 15.20: Legacy of the leader you want to be
Project forward to a time when delegates have achieved everything they wanted to achieve and hold group discussion as to what that looks like?
Delegates to write a personal letter from their future self after achieving the above, self-reflecting on their journey, their proudest moments, the legacy they have left behind and the values and behaviours they have embodied to get them to where they are. The letter will be emailed to arrive in their inboxes in 6-12 months’ time for them to reflect on how far they are on their leadership journey

Julie Chew
Julie Chew is MD of the Learning Train and a dynamic speaker, trainer, coach and presenter. She is skilled in leadership, management and people development through blended learning, developing and coaching individuals and teams, including senior leadership teams, to achieve their full potential. Julie uses innovation and humour to deliver effective training and development programmes to a wide range of audiences with outstanding results and feedback. Specialist areas include: human resources, motivation, team building, leadership, coaching and mentoring, strategic development and finance.
Kirsty Woodward
Kirsty is Director of Estates and Campus Services at the University of Leicester, which she joined in 2010, holding various positions there including Director of Campus Services and Deputy Director of Residential and Commercial Services. Kirsty is the current Chair of CUBO and has represented CUBO on the Board of the UUK/GuildHE Accommodation Code of Practice since October 2018. Prior to joining Leicester, Kirsty was a Senior Project Manager at the Russell Partnership, working with organisations such as the BBC and Goldman Sachs as well as a number of universities. It was while working for Leicester as a consultant that Kirsty began the journey of transforming the University’s catering service, which led to her being offered a permanent role at the institution. Her early career was spent in hotels and she also spent ten years at the University of Warwick, firstly as Catering Manager and then as Head of Catering Services. Kirsty is a former winner of a Caterer and Hotelkeeper Acorn Award and was named Cost Sector Caterer of the Year in 2001. She received her MBA from the University of Leicester in January 2017.
Melissa Browne
Melissa is Deputy Director of Commercial Services and Estates at the University of Kent, where she has been in post since 2022. She has worked in student accommodation since 2009 in both private providers and universities.
She has extensive experience in managing in-house and 3rd party contract staff, with direct strategic and operational management responsibilities, including managing soft services contracts, new builds, mobilisation and refurbishment projects, capital investment works, third party lettings/commercial summer lettings, outsourced and in-house catering.
As a trained life coach Melissa has focused her career on the importance of investing and developing people to create effective, diverse and happy working environments which allow teams to ‘thrive’ and achieve organisation goals and objectives. She specialises in leadership development, building training programmes, managing teams through organisational change and promoting culture and EDI initiatives while meeting commercial objectives and targets.
Melissa is a Living Black at University Commissioner and CUBO Chair-Elect, with responsibility for CUBO's learning and development strategy.
