The first CUBO conference to take place on the island of Ireland was held in Belfast this month and drew over 260 delegates from universities and commercial partners worldwide.
The summer conference, hosted by Queen’s University Belfast, focused on innovation within HE commercial services.
Taking place from 12-14 June 2024, the event featured a lineup of distinguished keynote speakers including sector experts, journalists, authors and innovators. Discussions highlighted crucial insights into how innovation can support the delivery of exceptional campus experiences, including authentic collaborations with diversity groups, recruiting diverse teams, personalising student services using AI technology, prioritising working lifts and accessible room layouts in student accommodation and adding voices to the political sphere championing HE, including a call to separate international students from immigration statistics.
Delegates participated in interactive workshops, engaged in thought-provoking discussions, and explored case studies and the latest survey data aimed at enhancing student support and operational excellence on campuses.
CUBO Chair Kirsty Woodward said, "We are delighted with the overwhelming response to this year’s summer conference. The strong turnout from colleagues far and wide, and the exceptional support from the team at Queen’s University, truly underscored the collaborative spirit that defines CUBO. This event exemplified our commitment to driving innovation, inclusivity and best practice across the sector."
A highlight of the event was the CUBO Awards ceremony, which honoured teams and projects that have significantly contributed to advancing campus experiences through a variety of creative initiatives. The ceremony capped off three days of intensive learning and networking, cementing the conference’s reputation as a premier gathering for HE commercial services leaders.
"This year's conference not only facilitated knowledge-sharing but also fostered a truly international dialogue," Kirsty added. "With participants from eight countries and representation from 102 universities and businesses serving the sector, the diversity of perspectives made for an enriching and insightful experience."
Caroline Young, Vice-President for Students and Corporate Services at Queen’s University Belfast said, "It was our absolute pleasure to host the CUBO Summer Conference at Queen’s University Belfast this year. We aimed to bring a taste of Belfast’s unique spirit and hospitality to the event, as well as showcasing our beautiful campus, and we are therefore delighted with the overwhelming feedback we have had from the delegates, sponsors and speakers of their experience."
"The impact and stories from the pre conference study tour, coupled with opportunities to meet up with, network and learn from friends, colleagues and peers from across the sector, and to share information and innovations during the conference, has been invaluable. Thank you to the CUBO Exec for putting together a programme that perfectly balanced inclusivity diversity and innovation. Come back to Belfast soon!"
