Residence Assistants Awards 2019

Celebrating Outstanding Students working in Residence Life

The 2nd Annual CUBO RA Awards took place on 7 May 2019, during the CUBO Residence Life Conference at Loughborough University's Imago Conference Centre.

Celebrating Outstanding Residence Assistants and Student Leaders

Residence Assistants (RAs) carry out essential work in developing a living and learning community, helping their fellow students to settle and thrive in university campus life. Sometimes known by other titles, they are students who work or volunteer in student accommodation to provide a social and support network for their community.

Residence Life is still relatively new in the UK. While many universities have had student support services in place for many years, the challenge and bridge to offering a full Residence Life programme is to become more proactive in supporting students. Spotting problems early and making a subtle but successful intervention can make a crucial difference to a student’s welfare. With young people living their lives increasingly online, having tools in place to help students develop social and community skills is now as important as academic studies.

RAs are at the heart of these programmes. They are trained in a variety of services from mental health, drug and alcohol awareness to health and safety and data protection. They organise a wide range of activities both social and practical, but it is often the softer skills - providing a shoulder to cry on or wise words – that make RAs such an asset to their university community.

CUBO Residence Life Conference & Awards Night

The CUBO RA Awards are presented at a dinner during the CUBO Residence Life Conference.

The 2019 conference took place on 7-8 May 2019 at the Imago Conference Centre, Holywell Park, Loughborough University, Loughborough LE11 3TU.

The CUBO Residence Life Conference, incorporating the CUBO and ACUHO-I Masterclasses, is a popular annual professional development event attracting residence life professionals from across the UK and Ireland, and both universities and private student accommodation providers. It includes theory and practice from the USA and the UK as well as opportunities to network with other residence life professionals and unique opportunity to hear from a panel of the winning RAs.

CUBO members and corporate partners receive a 25% discount on the conference price.

RAs and Residence Life Professionals provide essential support for hundreds of thousands of students every year. Only through their dedication, resourcefulness and hard work are we able to provide the environments and additional educational opportunities outside lecture theatres where they can learn, flourish and be supported. The CUBO RA Awards allow us to honour those whose contributions have been recognised by their peers as truly exceptional.
